Corporate Social Responsibility

Planting the SEEDS of a sustainable future

Coombs is committed to leaving a positive impact on the communities in which we work.

We do this through helping the development of sustainable communities by:

  • Sourcing Responsibly
  • Exercising Environmental Best Practice
  • Encouraging Social Inclusion
  • Developing Skills
  • Supporting Charitable Causes

Sourcing Responsibly

We focus on using sustainable, healthy and responsibly sourced materials for our projects with materials being locally sourced whenever possible.

Sourcing responsibly also includes the use of local subcontractors to minimise our carbon footprint and maximise the economic benefit to the region.

Exercising Environmental Best Practice

We undertake a variety of measures to protect and conserve biodiversity, the environment and natural resources such as regularly achieving 100% recycling on our projects; reducing energy requirements both in use and during construction; minimising pollution through local procurement and introducing measures to protect the natural habitat and wildlife.

Encouraging Social Inclusion

Healthier, happier and more successful lives can be achieved through social inclusion. We achieve this by acting as Considerate Contractor and positively engaging with our neighbours during construction. As an example during our College Road, Deal project with Sanctuary Housing we supported All Stars FC – an inclusive football club supporting children and adults with disabilities.

We support Catching Lives who work towards ending the harm caused to individuals, families and the community, by homelessness, rough sleeping and insecure housing. These individuals have, for many reasons, fallen through the gaps in society and feel they have nowhere else to turn.

Developing Skills

Developing skills is about helping our communities reach their greatest potential – whether this is through work experience, apprenticeships or encouraging sport in the local community. For almost 30 years we have been proud sponsors of Canterbury RFC, Chilham football club and support grass roots sport through sponsorship of Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys Sports Society, recently providing post protectors for their new 4G rugby pitch.

Supporting Charitable Causes

We take great pride in our staff raising funds for worthwhile causes including Age UK, Strong Bones Charity, the Pilgrims Hospice, Prostate Cancer UK Trust and Porchlight (a charity supporting homelessness and vulnerable people across Kent) through activities such as running the London marathon, bake sales, organising raffles and donating clothing.

Each year we pick a local charity to support, this year we have helped Catching Lives through events such as organizing a food bank and raising funds through the KM Dragon Boat Race, golf days and raffles. Catching Lives is a local charity who operate a homelessness day centre and provide a mental health outreach service for East Kent and Canterbury.
